All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
The last time she'd been in California, the doctors had given her a few years at best. They knew she wasn't going to make it longer than two, but they couldn't be sure that she'd make it as long as one. As she hung up with those same doctors, a single word echoed in her mind months. Not even half a year. Three. Three months she was given. She figured that she was in shock because of the level of calm she was maintaining as she dialed her only friend's number. Her fingers were shaking the tiniest bit, but she managed. Her voicemail picked up and it took everything Adrian had not to throw the phone across the room out of frustration.
After a moment of contemplation, Adrian grabbed her keys and her purse, slid on a pair of shoes and took off in the direction of Cassidy's house. She didn't have Cassidy's boyfriend's number, she didn't know where to call if she was working, the only thing she could think was to go to her house and hope that she was there. Tears were silently streaming down her face as she drove through the blur, but she didn't care. She couldn't do this alone, she needed help, something positive to hold onto and Cas was the only person she knew who could offer her anything at all.
She parked the car outside of the familiar house and walked up to the door, giving the doorbell a ring before knocking on it for good measure. Adrian, the girl who never went out in public without makeup on, was a mess. She was still in sweatpants and a t-shirt, her hair was up and the makeup she'd had on was now running down her face. She couldn't do it, she couldn't get through the next three months knowing that after, she'd have nothing left.
Adrian stood there with her arms wrapped around her torso to try and keep it together as she waited.
Isn't she a dream come true?

Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
Dylan had just finished his daily work out when he heard the door bell. He grabbed his towel to wipe off the sweat running down his face and body and draped it over his shoulder before walking out towards the main entrance.
The maid was coming out of the kitchen but Dylan cleared his throat to announce his presence and she turned. He waved his hand at her with a smile. "I'll get it." He said before continuing his way down to the door.
He opened it and for a brief moment, a surprised look crossed his face before concern took over as he looked over the woman's appearance. She was far removed from the glamorous look she seemed to always be adorned in every time he saw her.
"Adr- Cas isn't home." He started before stepping aside from the door. "D'you...come inside." It somehow didn't occur to him that he wasn't thinking or talking straight and he didn't want to know the actual reason why. He was looking at a woman who clearly needed help and even if he didn't have the capacity to help, he wanted to try.

When the door opened, Adrian's eyes lifted, the tiniest shred of hope in them because Cassidy was the only person who could make this easier. But what she saw made everything hurt. It started in her chest and she could feel it all the way down to her toes. Cassidy wasn't home. Her eyes glazed over and she blinked through tears that started filling her eyes again. Her breathing hitched and she gripped her chest as she could feel her breathing become sporadic. She was hyperventilating.
Adrian didn't stand there long, she didn't hear whatever words that came from his mouth and she didn't want to. She turned around, shaking her head. She had to get to her car, she had to go find Cassidy. Or something. She just couldn't be there. Not with him. Not now.
She walked quickly, with a single goal in mind. Adrian didn't look back, she didn't care to.

Adrian began to breathe heavily and Dylan stepped close to bridge the space between them but no sooner had he moved, Adrian was already turning around and walking away.
"Shit, no Adrian." Dylan started before he leapt off the stairs to the foyer and walked towards Adrian to stop her from walking away.
His hand wrapped around her arm, much like the last time they had seen each other, but this time the urgency felt a lot less hostile than before.
"Adrian you don't have to go. You don't look like you're in a state to drive. Please come back inside. Please."

She was in arms length of her car door when his hand wrapped around her arm. She didn't want to look at him, she didn't want him to be the one she was in front of right now. Cassidy would have been far more comforting and understanding. She at least had feelings and cared about Adrian and her well-being just as much as Adrian cared about hers. But she was left in less than capable hands. He told her she didn't have to go , but she wanted to.
And while she wanted to get in her car and go, she knew he was right. What good would it do her mother if she got into an accident? Adrian turned into him and it was like opening the floodgates. She didn't want him to be the one who comforted her, but he was the only thing she had.
Her whole body was shaking, she only noticed because of the way her hands were practically vibrating against his chest. "I...I have...to find Cas. I need her...I can't, I can't do this," She struggled to force out the words through her never-ending sobs, but she had to at least hope that he would understand.

Crying. The last time he handled a crying woman, she was asking him not to leave her. Dylan hadn't been kind enough to give her the time of day because she was being hysterical. Adrian wasn't crying because of him. Much as he would like to snap his fingers and bring Cassidy here, he couldn't. He was all she had right now.
His arms wrapped around her gingerly as he cringed, trying hard not to say the wrong thing.
"What can't you do, Adrian?" He asked finally. This was not his forte, comforting people. What the hell was he supposed to do?

If she could think past her sadness, she never would have expected him to pay any attention to her while she was like this. Adrian wasn't the crying type, least of all in front of people. Least of all in front of someone who could care less about her. But the moment his arms wrapped around her, she felt her heart stutter in her chest. She wrapped her arms around him, acting on the moment rather than on what she knew she shouldn't have been doing.
This was Dylan and she hadn't forgot about that.
Adrian shook her head against his chest, she couldn't figure out what to say to him. She couldn't trust him with this, could she? All she could think about was the way he'd handled his own mother's death, there was hardly any way he was capable of comforting her about her mother's impending death. To be fair, she couldn't even get the words out through her tears this time. She wouldn't be able to tell him anything at this rate.

Adrian wrapping her arms around him surprised him that he froze for a brief moment before letting himself pull her close. This was not what he saw himself doing, ever. Especially not for Adrian. But there was no way he was going to let her drive in this state. He was an asshole, sure, but he wasn't soulless.
He ran his hand up and down her back, recognising that the situation and position they were in right then was less than ideal. Cassidy could come back and see them this way. She'd freak out that he was doing anything with any of her friends. She had too little she brought home as it was.
"Adrian," he said softly after a while. "Will you please come inside? I'll call Cas and ask her where she is."

She could feel the vibration of his voice against his chest and she closed her eyes. It was easy to take comfort in his voice, the way it softly curled around her name. It was so different from the way he'd been talking to her since she met him. He had kid gloves on with her now, but she didn't mind.
He offered to call his sister and she nodded against his chest. Adrian still wanted his arms around her, if there was anything she wanted from him it was just the physical comfort. She didn't need him to say anything, just hold her and let her be sad. And yet, she pulled back and started wiping at her face. She felt disgusting all of a sudden, wanting desperately to disappear so he couldn't see the makeup that was smeared down her face.
She kept her eyes cast down and wrapped her arms back around her torso, gripping tightly to her shirt to keep from shaking.

He didn't really think much of it when she pulled away but he didn't want her to think that he was looking for an out either so he curled one arm around her as they walked back to the house. He led her to the living area and sat her down before excusing himself to go to the kitchen. There, as he grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, concentrating on Cassidy.
He hadn't used his abilities on her for a really long time so it felt incredibly awkward trying to picture his sister. It would have been easier if he had something of hers in hand but he hadn't been in Cassidy's room since she was five. So memories of her were going to do.
Images of the city blurred in his head until she heard her voice, arguing with her professor about some theory of his that she didn't care for. Dylan smiled before he realised there was no way she was going to be able to get to her phone any time soon. The woman was on a war path and her phone was definitely the last thing she wanted to bother with.
He was on his own.
Blinking as he got back into his own head, he brought the bottle out to where he had left Adrian, sitting down beside her as he handed her the bottle. He brought his hand to the small of her back and pushed slightly. "Drink up...Cas is going to be awhile. She's in class." He paused before pushing on. "Tell me what's wrong, Adrian."

All The Boys
She came here to entertain you
With all that had gone on between them, Adrian wasn't sure where she stood with him. Whether they would be considered friends or just a hookup or if there was even a label for what she could call them. She hated when things were left up in the air when it came to emotions and feelings. Uncertainty was not something that sat well with her and she'd been thinking about it for a few weeks, lingering on the way they ended things. Especially when she was led into his home with his arm around her shoulders.
Adrian took a seat on the couch that he led her to and she sat there with her arms hugging herself because it was the only thing keeping her from falling apart again. She didn't want to cry in front of him anymore, it wasn't fair that he'd caught her at a moment of weakness. She may have been holding his secret, but now he was holding her weakness and it hardly seemed an equal trade. He walked out of the room and she stared at a spot on the table in front of her, hardly blinking, working on calming her body down.
When he returned, she didn't bother lifting her eyes, even when he sat beside her. She took the bottle from him, only having seen it in her peripheral. With a deep breath, she uncapped it and forced the water down her throat, even though every stubborn bone in her body was telling her not to. Cassidy wasn't coming any time soon, so she just had to calm down enough to be able to drive and then she could get herself out of this situation. His fingers on her back did nothing to help her, but his request definitely distracted her.
Finally she turned her head to him and she shook her head, "That's none of your business, Paige." She repeated the very words he'd thrown at her the last time they were together, said in the same tone, giving little away about the irritation that had boiled up inside of her. Where did he get off thinking that it was fair for her to dive into her life story, but he couldn't answer a simple question about her best friend?
Isn't she a dream come true?

imma say all the words inside my head
Don't you tell me what you think that I could be
With his own words thrown back at him, Dylan had to appreciate that one, she held on to his words, and two, her sense of humour despite the seemingly troubling situation was still working. He looked away to hide the smile on his face before breathing out.
"My mom died when I was nine." He offered after a moment. He pulled his hand back to his side before leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. He hated the fact that he was rehashing this with someone who could potentially ruin his relationship with his sister even further. But he realised that quid pro quo was not just a famous line from a movie about a cannibal. It was a heavy thing for him to give her but whatever was making her cry, couldn't be so light either. Despite how little he had thought of her before, he understood what kind of person she was. She wasn't the type to cry over spilt milk.
"They got into a car accident and Cas got injured but my mom died instantly." He took a deep breath and pressed his thumb against his brow bone, soothing himself. "At the time, I didn't know about her tumour. Hell, neither did my father. She hid it well. My father knew about the tumour because of the autopsy and he kept it from both of us until I turned twenty. I blamed Cas for it until then." He paused and shook his head, not liking how this was making him look. "She doesn't really know why I've avoided her. She's drawn her own conclusions about me and if I tell her why, she'd probably just think I'm making excuses for being a shit brother. I'd...rather she hate me for something I'm not than for something I actually am."
He cleared his throat before turning his head a little in her direction. "So whatever it is you're broken up about...you can tell me. I'm not gonna judge."

She came here to entertain you
The words that came from his mouth weren't what she wanted to hear. She didn't want to understand him anymore because he'd made it clear that he didn't care one way or another what she thought of him and the way he treated his sister. But there he was, telling her now exactly what she'd asked then. She knew the bare bones of what had happened. She knew of the accident and the passing of their mother, but she was thrown for a loop over the tumor that would have likely taken her away from them regardless.
And whether she wanted to or not, she could understand the blame that he laid on Cassidy. It was the blame that she'd put heavily on her biological father and even her step father after him. Two men that had bolted without a second thought about her or her mother. Cassidy lived while their mother died, and yet, that was exactly how it should have been. Parents weren't supposed to outlive their children. At least, that was what Amelia said over and over again. Even though she could relate on some level, it drove her mad that he would put something so heavy on Cassidy when she had nothing to do with it.
Adrian tightened her arms around her, refusing to look at him to give away the empathy she could feel for him. On some level, she knew what it felt like, but she hadn't lost her mother completely. She'd just been watching her die for the last couple of years, but she'd been watching her suffer through a hell of a life for longer than that. She took a deep breath and chewed on the inside of her lip, debating heavily on whether she wanted to give out the information that would put them on a similar level. She was giving him all the ammunition he needed to make her crumble, "My mom only has 3 months left. The last time I talked to her doctors they said years and now...now it's not even half of one."
Isn't she a dream come true?

Grimacing when Adrian finally spoke up, Dylan closed his eyes and sighed, bowing his head as his hand slid over the back of his neck. They had revealed way too much about their pains over such a short time of knowing each other. And they didn't even like each other.
Or so Dylan thought, anyway.
He took a deep breath and placed his hand on hers, leaving enough room for her if she wanted to bolt. It was useless to think that he didn't at least care for her a little bit now. He at least had his dad around to seek comfort from. If Cassidy was the first person Adrian wanted to run to after finding out, he didn't imagine she had anybody else.

She came here to entertain you
His hand covered hers and she took a deep breath. The tears she'd been fighting off were starting to prick underneath her eyes and she knew it was only a matter of time before she started again. She'd had to stave them off when she was only the phone with her mother, putting on her big girl pants and acting like the adult she'd always been for her mother. They'd always been so close and so similar, she wasn't sure she could imagine a life without her or a life that had included someone else. She didn't regret a life without her father, what she regretted was that he'd chosen just recently to come back around.
She gripped his hand, staring at the two when she answered, "Sunny Oceanside, California. Which is where I was supposed to be for the holidays." Instead of drinking a lot and hooking up with him. Adrian kept that part hanging in the air between them, no use in solidifying it with her words. She couldn't regret her decisions too much, however, because one way or another she would have gotten this information, at least this way she had him to sort of lean on even at a cost.
Her eyes lifted up to him and she frowned, "I know that I shouldn't be telling you this, but...I didn't have anywhere else to go."
